Managing Your Mental Health Heading into the New Year

Healthy Living.

As the new year approaches, many people make taking care of their mental health a priority or list it among their new-year’s resolutions. Your mental health is a great thing to take charge of in the new year and making it a priority for your family can set you up for a happier and healthier year. Here are some tips to help you start the year off on the right foot:

Be realistic

It’s great to have aspirations and goals, but it’s important to be realistic about what you can accomplish. Setting unrealistic goals can lead to disappointment and negative feelings. Instead, try setting achievable goals that you can work towards. It can be helpful to break down lofty aspirations into achievable steps. You will get to your goal step by step, and you will learn and grow along the way.

Practice self-care

Make sure to carve out time for yourself to relax and recharge. This can include activities such as:
  • Regular exercise that you enjoy
  • Taking a relaxing bath
  • Meditating
  • Feeding yourself healthy and nourishing foods
  • Pursuing a hobby

Seek support

Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling with your mental health. It can be intimidating to seek help, but it really makes all the difference. It is also important to model this behavior for family members. Sometimes all the encouragement someone needs are the examples you set. Asking for help can look like reaching out to a trusted friend or family member, talking to your doctor, or making a therapy appointment.

Prioritize sleep

A lack of sleep can negatively impact your mental health. Try to get a consistent amount of sleep each night and create a relaxing bedtime routine to help you wind down.

Exercise regularly

Exercise has been shown to have a positive impact on our mental health. Find a form of physical activity that you enjoy and try to incorporate it into your routine. It’s even better when you can get the whole family involved!

Eat a healthy diet

A healthy diet can improve our overall well-being, and it can hugely impact mental health. Try to incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your meals and limit your intake of processed and sugary foods.

By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can start the new year off with a focus on your mental health and well-being. Remember to be kind to yourself and take things one day at a time.
