Fill Up on National Nutrition Month Facts

Healthy Living.

March is National Nutrition Month, so we wanted to take this opportunity to share some ways that you can make sure you are filling your body nutritiously and staying healthy.

Making good eating choices involves more than just your own habits – it also includes making choices that are good for the environment and your community. This is called sustainable eating. Here are a few ways you can make sure you are eating sustainably:

Keep the environment in mind.

It doesn’t have to be difficult to eat in a way that is good for both you and the environment. Incorporating Meatless Monday into your week is a great way to cut down on your meat consumption. This simple choice can have a significant impact on your own health and the environment.

You can also be intentional about reducing your use of plastic in your grocery shopping. Try using your own reusable bags instead of disposable plastic shopping bags. Stick to fresh fruits and vegetables instead of heavily packaged, processed foods. You can even try your hand at growing some fruits and vegetables in your own backyard!

Be financially conscious.

Often, saving money is a top priority when it comes to buying food.  One way to save money is by meal planning. When you plan your meals ahead of time you avoid wasting food, and you are less likely to purchase food out when you could have otherwise eaten the food you already have at home.

Try Recipes.

Making healthy choices can be fun. Try choosing one new recipe per week that you would like to try. Look for recipes that use fresh produce and whole grains. Try incorporating ingredients you don’t normally use or haven’t tried yet. You may find a new favorite meal!

Your heart, bones, muscles, and other organs rely heavily on a healthy diet, so it is important to eat foods that will benefit your health.

Talk to a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

An RDN has the knowledge to help you discover the best way to fuel your body with food. They can help create a plan for you that is right for your body and its needs, and they can answer any questions or concerns you have about your diet and eating habits.

Eating nutritiously and sustainably doesn’t have to be difficult. With a little planning and help from a nutritionist, you can be well on your way to making smart and healthy eating choices for yourself and your family.
