Winter Baby Safety: Tips for New Parents

Crisp Living.

Keeping your baby safe and cozy during the colder months becomes a top priority as temperatures drop. At Crisp Regional Hospital, we understand new parents’ unique challenges, especially during winter. That’s why we’ve gathered these essential tips to help you protect your little one during the chillier months.

Dressing Your Baby for Cold Weather

Layering is the key to keeping your baby warm. Start with a soft, breathable base layer, like a onesie, and add fleece or wool outer layers. If you’re heading outdoors, consider a snug, weather-appropriate coat, hat, mittens, and booties. Remember:

  • Avoid Overheating: Indoors, remove heavy layers like coats and hats to prevent your baby from becoming too warm.
  • Check for Comfort: Feel your baby’s chest or back to ensure they are comfortably warm, as hands and feet might naturally feel cool.

Safe Sleep Practices in Winter

When it comes to sleep, safety is always the priority. While it’s tempting to add extra blankets to keep your baby cozy, these can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Instead:

  • Use a firm mattress and a fitted sheet in the crib.
  • Dress your baby in a warm, one-piece sleep sack or wearable blanket instead of loose blankets.
  • Keep the crib free of toys, pillows, and extra bedding.
  • Ensure the room is at a comfortable temperature—around 68–72°F.

Keeping Your Baby Safe From Cold-Weather Hazards

Winter weather brings unique challenges, but with a few precautions, you can ensure your baby’s safety:

  • Avoid Overexposure: Limit the time your baby spends outside in cold or windy conditions. Babies lose heat faster than adults, making them more susceptible to hypothermia.
  • Mind the Car Seat: Remove bulky coats or snowsuits before strapping your baby into their car seat, as these can affect the harness’s fit. Instead, cover your baby with a blanket once secured.

Protecting Baby’s Skin in the Cold

Cold air can dry out your baby’s delicate skin. To keep it soft and healthy:

  • Apply a baby-safe moisturizer to exposed areas, especially the face and hands.
  • Use a humidifier in your home to combat dry indoor air caused by heating systems.

Preparing for Winter Travel

If you’re planning a trip, make sure your baby stays safe and warm:

  • Pack extra layers, diapers, and blankets for emergencies.
  • Keep a first-aid kit and baby essentials handy in case of unexpected delays.
  • Plan ahead with these health tips for holiday travel.

Caring for a Sick Baby During Winter

Colds and viruses are more common in winter. Protect your baby by:

  • Practicing good hygiene, including frequent handwashing.
  • Keeping your baby away from large crowds and sick individuals.
  • Scheduling regular check-ups to monitor your baby’s health.
