Summer is an especially good time for focusing on self-care. We often find ourselves getting wrapped up in the fun and busyness that summer brings and forgetting some of the most important things when it comes to taking care of ourselves.
There are a few things to keep in mind during the summer season to ensure that you enjoy the warmer months while also staying safe and healthy.
1. Protect your skin.
Spending time outdoors in the sun is great for you. Just make sure that you are wearing enough sunscreen or clothing to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. If you’re headed to the beach, pool, or another sunny spot, bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat. Stay on top of reapplying sunscreen every hour or so.
You should also protect your skin from bug bites and stings and poisonous plants. Wear bug spray when necessary and know how to identify plants like poison ivy and poison oak.
2. Drink plenty of water.
It is easy to lose track of how much water we are drinking when we get busy. But especially in warm weather, it is extremely important to stay hydrated. Dehydration can lead to serious problems like fainting or heat stroke.
Staying hydrated doesn’t have to be boring. Try infusing your water with fruit, or add in some foods with high water content like watermelon.
3. Stay active.
As always, daily exercise is an important way to keep your
heart, bones, and muscles strong. Try some new, fun activities this summer like hiking, kayaking, or biking. Just make sure that you stay hydrated. It may be best to exercise in the morning or evening to avoid the worst of the heat.
4. Eat healthy.
There are so many great summer fruits and veggies that you can cook with, pack in a picnic to the beach or park, and use at your next cookout with friends and
family. Always remember to properly wash produce before eating it.
It’s also important to store food at the correct temperature. On hot days, especially, make sure your dairy products are kept cold so that they don’t spoil and make you sick.
5. Practice Water Safety.
Whether it’s the ocean, lake, or pool, we all love some time spent on the water during the summer. Just make sure that you, your friends, and your family are enjoying the water safely. Never go swimming by yourself, and keep a close eye on
children or weak swimmers. Pay attention to lifeguard rules, and wear a life jacket when boating.
6. Get some rest.
Many people have the opportunity to take a few days off work or enjoy a vacation during the summer. Amidst all the fun, it is important to take some time for yourself and
rest. We all need time to recharge, and the summer months can be a great opportunity to do that.
With these safety tips in mind, you are ready to have a fun and safe summer!
