Crisp Living.

Water makes up a large portion of our bodies, so it isn’t surprising that not drinking enough water can cause many health problems. How much water you should drink depends on your height, weight, and daily activity among other factors.

Dehydration is a common problem, and people often don’t recognize the warning signs. Dehydration can occur at any time, but it is most common after exercise or in hot temperatures. If it isn’t addressed right away, dehydration can be life-threatening, so it is important to be able to recognize the warning signs so that you can take care of a dehydrated person immediately.

Dehydration Signs and Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Cramps
  • Inability to sweat
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

How To Help a Dehydrated Person

The most important thing to do for someone who is dehydrated is to make sure they get fluids in their body. Water is the best thing, but anything high in electrolytes can be very helpful for dehydration as well.

Dehydration can often be accompanied by overheating, which can exacerbate dehydration symptoms. In these cases, get the dehydrated person into a cool place.

In severe dehydration cases, a person may faint or have shortness of breath. If this happens seek medical attention immediately.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

The amount of water a person should drink will vary for each person. However, as a general rule of thumb, you can divide your weight by two. That number will equal the number of ounces of fluid you should drink per day.

That may sound like a lot to try to keep up with each day. However, those fluids include hydrating drinks that aren’t water and the water that is found in food. Certain foods are more hydrating than others. Many fruits and vegetables are very hydrating.

It is important to remember that there are some drinks that can contribute more to dehydration. Drinks with caffeine or alcohol can cause dehydration and shouldn’t be counted as part of the recommended fluid intake.

When you drink enough water each day, you’ll likely notice numerous health benefits such as more energy, clearer skin, better digestion, and more!
