Pain Management.
July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month, a good time to discuss a condition that affects nearly 300,000 children and teens across the United States. Many people associate arthritis only with older adults, but the reality is that kids, too, can experience the pain, stiffness, and swelling of arthritic joints.
At Crisp Regional Hospital, we’re committed to helping families in our community recognize the signs of juvenile arthritis (JA) and understand the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
Juvenile arthritis is not a single disease but a term used to describe several autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that develop in children under the age of 16. The immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, leading to joint pain and inflammation—and sometimes impacting eyes, skin, and other organs.
Common types of juvenile arthritis include:
Oligoarticular Juvenile Arthritis: Affects four or fewer joints, often larger joints like knees or ankles.
Polyarticular Juvenile Arthritis: Affects five or more joints and can involve smaller joints like fingers or wrists.
Systemic Juvenile Arthritis: Causes joint swelling as well as fevers, rash, and inflammation in other parts of the body.
Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent joint damage and maintain mobility. Keep an eye out for these symptoms:
✅ Persistent joint pain, swelling, or stiffness, especially in the morning
✅ Limping or difficulty using an arm or leg
✅ Fatigue, reduced activity levels, or irritability
✅ Unexplained fever or rash
If you notice any of these symptoms lasting longer than a few weeks, it’s important to consult your child’s healthcare provider.
Prompt medical care can help:
Reduce pain and inflammation
Preserve joint function and mobility
Prevent long-term joint damage
Support normal growth and development
Improve overall quality of life
Treatment for juvenile arthritis may include medication, physical therapy, exercise, and sometimes lifestyle changes. Every child’s journey with JA is unique, requiring a personalized plan of care.
Living with juvenile arthritis can be challenging, but with early diagnosis, effective treatment, and strong family support, many kids can manage their symptoms and live active, fulfilling lives.
