Healthy Weight Awareness Month

Healthy Living.

January is Healthy Weight Awareness month. The first month of the year is often the time when people make goals and resolutions about their weight, diet, and exercise. But many people do not know how to set and achieve their goals in a healthy way. A healthy weight will look different for each person and be based on a number of factors.

Below, we will discuss some of the ways you can determine how to achieve a healthy weight this year.

1. Understand Your Body

You may have heard the term “body type” before, and maybe you even know what body type you have.  What someone’s body looks like on the outside is a result of many factors including, our body’s metabolism, genetics, age, and overall health.
Because everyone’s body is different in the way that it works, there is no “one size fits all” solution for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. It is important to learn what exactly your body needs and use that information along with your personal health and fitness goals to determine what a healthy weight is for you. Your doctor, a nutritionist, or a personal trainer can all help you asses what will work best for you.

2. Set Realistic Goals

When it comes to setting your weight-loss goals, it is important to be realistic about your goal and about the steps it will take for you to achieve your goal. When we set too big of a goal or expect immediate results, we are more likely to become discouraged or give up when we run into challenges or when it takes longer than we planned to achieve our goals.
It is important to break your goals up into small achievable steps. Keep track of your progress, and celebrate your small successes.

3. Focus on Nutrition

One of the primary ways of keeping a healthy weight is to have good diet and nutrition. A good diet is more about making sure that your body gets the nutrients it needs, than it is about restricting yourself from certain foods or a number of calories. A healthy diet should include:
  • Good sources of protein such as grilled chicken or fish
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Healthy fats such as nuts and avocados
One thing that can help you maintain a healthy diet is meal planning. If you plan your meals and prepare them ahead of time, you will be more likely to stick to your healthy choices consistently.

4. Stay Active

It is recommended that most adults have at least 30 minutes of exercise or physical activity per day. This is a great way to keep your body physically and mentally healthy, which are both important factors in maintaining a healthy weight.
Exercise can become a fun part of your routine that you look forward to. Find an activity that you enjoy; you can even get your friends and family involved. Some ideas include:
  • Yoga
  • Hiking
  • Going for a walk around your neighborhood
  • Joining a community sports team
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight this year is easily achievable when you make a few adjustments to your daily routine and start making healthier choices. Focusing on your health more than you focus on a number on the scale will ensure that your body feels its best and you live your healthiest life.
