Healthy Vision Month

Healthy Living.

This month is Healthy Vision Month – a time dedicated to raising awareness about eye health and encouraging people to have an eye exam. Sometimes scheduling an eye exam can get neglected in the midst of everything else that keeps our lives busy. However, eye health is extremely important and should be made a priority.

What is an eye exam?

In a comprehensive dilated eye exam, your eye doctor will use special eye drops to widen your pupils. This allows your doctor to check for disease or vision problems. You may experience some slight discomfort during an eye exam, but it will not be painful. Eye exams are a quick way to make sure that your eyes are healthy.

Why should you get an eye exam?

An eye exam can be used to check for and diagnose several things, including:

  • Lazy eye
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration

Many of these conditions can be successfully treated when caught early, sometimes with something as simple as wearing corrective lenses.

How can you protect your vision?

  • Get an eye exam regularly.
  • Be informed about your family’s eye health history.
  • Eat green veggies and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These contain vitamins and nutrients that are important for healthy eyes.
  • Wear sunglasses when outside in the sun.
  • Clean glasses or contacts properly.

Many people don’t realize that taking care of your eyes can help you stay healthy overall. Studies have shown that people with vision problems are at a higher risk of diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, strokes, injury, and depression.

Use this healthy vision month as motivation to schedule an eye exam, and encourage your loved ones to care for their eye health as well.
