Cancer Awareness.
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the U.S., but the good news is that it is also one of the most preventable. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of early detection and encourage routine screenings like colonoscopies. At Crisp Regional, we are committed to providing the care and education our community needs to stay healthy and informed.
Colorectal cancer often develops silently, with no noticeable symptoms in its early stages. By the time symptoms appear—such as changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, or unexplained weight loss—the cancer may have already progressed. That’s why routine screenings are so important. When caught early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable, and in many cases, preventable.
A colonoscopy is the most effective screening method for colorectal cancer. It allows doctors to detect and remove precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that individuals at average risk begin screening at age 45. However, those with a family history or other risk factors may need to start earlier.
Benefits of a Colonoscopy:
✔️ Detects precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer
✔️ Identifies colorectal cancer at an early, more treatable stage
✔️ Only required every 10 years for most people with normal results
✔️ Can be a life-saving procedure
In addition to regular screenings, lifestyle choices can play a big role in lowering your risk:
🥗 Eat a healthy diet – Focus on fiber-rich foods, fruits, and vegetables.
🚶 Stay active – Regular exercise helps reduce cancer risk.
🚭 Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol – Both increase the risk of colorectal cancer.
⚕️ Know your family history – If colorectal cancer runs in your family, talk to your doctor about early screenings.
At Crisp Regional, we believe prevention is key to fighting colorectal cancer. If you’re 45 or older—or have risk factors that require earlier screening—now is the time to schedule your colonoscopy. Don’t wait until symptoms appear; early detection saves lives.
