Cervical Health Awareness Month: Protecting Women’s Health

Cancer Awareness.

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, a time to focus on the importance of preventive care in protecting women’s health. At Crisp Regional Hospital, we are committed to raising awareness about cervical health and empowering women in our community to prioritize regular screenings. Early detection through Pap smears and HPV testing can save lives by identifying cervical cancer or precancerous changes before symptoms arise.

Understanding Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer begins in the cells lining the cervix—the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. In most cases, cervical cancer is caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV). While HPV is a common virus that many people are exposed to, regular screenings and timely treatment can prevent HPV-related cervical cancer from developing.

Why Pap Smears and HPV Screenings Are Essential

Pap smears and HPV testing are crucial tools in detecting early changes in cervical cells:

  • Pap Smear: This test collects cells from the cervix to look for abnormalities. It is recommended every three years for women aged 21-29 and every five years for women aged 30-65 when combined with HPV testing.
  • HPV Testing: Often performed alongside a Pap smear, this test identifies the presence of high-risk HPV types known to increase the risk of cervical cancer.

Who Should Get Screened?

Guidelines recommend regular screenings for women starting at age 21. However, your healthcare provider may adjust the frequency based on your medical history, age, and risk factors. Women over 65 with a history of normal test results may no longer need screenings, but discussing this with your provider is essential.

Preventive Measures Beyond Screenings

In addition to regular screenings, women can take other steps to reduce their risk of cervical cancer:

  • HPV Vaccination: Available for individuals starting as early as age 9, the HPV vaccine protects against the most common high-risk HPV types.
  • Safe Practices: Using barrier protection during sexual activity and limiting the number of sexual partners can lower exposure to HPV.
  • Avoid Tobacco: Smoking is linked to a higher risk of cervical cancer and can exacerbate the effects of HPV.
